College Reading

Ellen Carillo, a Writing Studies scholar and professor of Rhetoric at the University of Connecticut offers a book-length examination of the skills and sensibilities associated with careful and critical reading inĀ The Writer’s Guide to Mindful Reading, available free of charge from the Writing Across the Curriculum Clearinghouse, from the University Press of Colorado.

The Writing Program has created a handout that clarifies forms of annotation: Smart Reading: Annotating a Document.

Other scholars have provided useful documents: one explaining how “to read like a writer,” another on how “to read a book,” and still another on how to “gut a book:”

Bunn, “How to Read Like a Writer”

Edwards “How to Read a Book”

Shibusawa, “Gutting a Book”
